Medical services company SpaMedica is open for business in High Weald House – delivering high-quality NHS eye treatment to people from across East Sussex.
SpaMedica specialises in cataract surgery, ‘YAG laser capsulotomy’ and retina services. Founded in 2008, the company has 50 hospitals across the UK, treating thousands of NHS patients every year.
The firm is opening in locations across the country to bring eye care closer to people’s homes. As part of this expansion programme, it has moved into High Weald House to give East Sussex residents fast, easy access to NHS treatment, while alleviating the burden on nearby hospitals and reducing local waiting lists.
SpaMedica’s new hospital now occupies a large part of the ground floor of High Weald House. It employs 17 staff – you can see some of them above, with the Bexhill Mayor – and it’s already recruiting more nurses to support its growing number of patients.
The Bexhill hospital provides cataract surgery and YAG laser capsulotomy. It plans to introduce additional eye services soon and expects to treat well over 2,000 local patients a year.

Emma Shaw, SpaMedica’s Head of Property, said:
“Cataract surgery can make a huge difference to people’s lives, giving them their independence back and allowing them to enjoy hobbies and activities again. We’re passionate about delivering the best possible care and ensuring our patients receive a highly personalised service.
“In seeking to bring our services to East Sussex, we looked at many properties around the Hastings, Bexhill and Eastbourne area, and decided High Weald House was the best option. It’s in a scenic location and the building is highly attractive – both important factors in creating a calming, peaceful location for our patients. It enables us to provide the kind of high-quality environment you’d normally expect from a private medical provider.”
The company is already becoming part of the local community, running initiatives including a competition for Bexhill Academy pupils to create eye-themed artwork to hang on the walls of its new hospital. It will also host regular optometry training sessions to build closer links with other medical professionals in the community.
